Tiles of this type have been found in the remains of Gallifort castle in Deurne, close to Antwerp. They probably date to just before 1585, the year the complex was destroyed by the Spaniards (Cagnie & Geyskens 2010, p. 1, 9-11). Similar tiles were also recovered from buildings of the famous Antwerp printers Plantin and Moretus (now a museum).
Border tiles were usually applied as a plinth in the interior of houses, especially in the most representative rooms. They made a colorful accent in a mostly sober interior with white plastered walls and dark oak furniture. A corner version of this border decoration is also known (Pluis, p. 507, afb. A.15.02.60), so that a full square could be made as a frame for a panel of ornamental tiles or a tile picture. The author and researcher of Antwerp tiles Frans Cagnie considers that these tiles were probably meant to be used as a frame for tile pictures (Cagnie 2012, pp. 88-89, p. 111: supplement IV).
