Blue and white biblical plate

JVV 0109

Makkum, dated 1788

Tichelaar pottery

Painter: Gatse Sytses

The plate is painted in blue with the biblical story of The calling of the first disciples of Jesus, based on engraving number 20/23 from Toneel ofte Vertooch by Pieter Schut from 1659. Schuts’ design is in turn based on an engraving by Ant. Wierix in the Theatrum Biblicum. The well is undecorated. The border is painted with four cartouches, each filled with demi-flowers, separated from one another by trellis-work. The back is glazed with tin glaze. The date ‘Ao 1788’ is carved within the foot-rim.

Dimensions: diameter 23.5 cm / 9.25 in.

Sold to a Dutch private collector.
