An almost identical tea canister, marked LVE, was sold in 2004 at Christie’s Amsterdam (p. 13, lot 49). A tea canister marked LVE and DW was in the collection of Stodel antiques in 1981 (Hoekstra-Klein, p. 39). That example was painted with similar floral motifs and chinoiserie decorations.
Explanatory note
The pottery painter Jan van der Wal was appointed as first painter and foreman at The Metal Pot pottery in 1691. He had already worked in 1685 as a master painter at The Greek A pottery. In 1695 he died at the young age of 33. And therefore all the Delftware he executed at The Metal Pot pottery were painted between 1691 and 1695.
