Blue and white floral chinoiserie jar

JVV 0466

Delft, 1650-1680

The ovoid jar has a lightly spreading foot and a short, straight upright neck. The jar is painted in blue with a continuous floral decor of plants and flowers. Birds, butterflies, dragonflies and insects fly in the air or sit on a branch. The neck is decorated with a band of pointed ornaments.

Dimensions: height 23 cm / 9.05 in.

Explanatory note
The floral decoration is inspired by Chinese porcelain from the period of the last Ming emperor Chongzhen (1628-1644). The flowers and plants on Delft pottery from the period 1650-1680 are much more exuberant and rendered more naturalistically than on the Chinese originals.
