Polychrome plate with flowers

JVV 0453

Delft, 1713-1740

The Porcelain Claw pottery

Mark: IVL and 5, period of Johannes van Lockhorst and Margaretha van der Gucht (1713-1740)

The plate without foot rim has a narrow, flat flange and is painted in polychrome with an exuberant oriental garden landscape. In the centre, a bird sits on a fence flanked by a large number of plants and flowers issuing from rocks. A second bird flies in the air. Three concentric rings are painted on the back.

Dimensions: diameter 22 cm / 8.66 in.

Explanatory note
The decor is a free adaptation of decorations on Chinese porcelain and was probably developed in this pottery.
