Blue and white lobed dish with village in a manganese powdered border

JVV 0444

Northern Netherlands, 1650-1680

The lobed dish is composed of twenty-seven double lobes. The curved centre is painted in blue with a village within a double circle. The lobed border has a manganese powdered ground.

Dimensions: diameter 34 cm / 13.38 in.

Explanatory note
The combination of a blue painting within a manganese powdered border is frequently applied on Dutch tiles made between 1660 and 1750. The landscapes and shepherds painted on the lobed dishes are also depicted on tiles. For that reason, this type of lobed dishes are attributed to tile factories in Harlingen or Rotterdam. However, we can assume that a substantial proportion of these lobed dishes were made in Delft.
