Blue and white chinoiserie jug

JVV 0426 

Delft, 1700-1720 

The jug has an ovoid body with a short, spreading neck, an ear-shaped handle that ends in a rat tail, and a high spout connected to the neck with an s-shaped brace. The lid has a baluster-shaped knob. The jug is painted all round with a fisherman in a boat on a river in an oriental rocky landscape. Two Chinese are standing along the waterfront, one holding a leafy branch and the other a fruit. The handle, spout and lid are decorated with various ornaments.
