Delft, circa 1680
The charger has a wide-spreading rim and is painted in blue with the biblical theme of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:7). Jesus sits to the left of the well, known as the well of Jacob, the woman is standing on the right, holding a large water jug on the edge of the well. Behind them stands a tree amongst shrubbery. At some distance are Jesus’ disciples who are returning from the walled city of Sychar where they had bought food.
The depiction is framed within a double circle, a continuous band of scrolls is painted on the flange, the space in between is plain white.
