Blue and white ornamental dish

JVV 0205

Delft, 1690-1710

The dish has a slightly raised flange and is painted in blue with a full ornamental decor. A quatrefoil with a diamond shape and four stylized flowers is in the centre of the dish. The surrounding surface is painted with flowers and leafy scrolls and a circular bar with four monster or lion heads. The flange is decorated with flowers and leafy scrolls, connected by bars, on a blue ground.

Dimensions: diameter 34,5 cm / 13.58 in.

Explanatory note
An ornamental decor that covers the surface of a dish like this is exceptional. The decor appears to be a later adaptation of the grotesque decor, which originated in Italy.
