Kingma pottery
Painter: attributed to Adam Sijbel
The plate is painted in blue with the biblical story of Samson carrying the doors of the city gate of Gaza. Depicted is the moment he reaches the top of the hill and lays down the doors. The Judges bible book reference ‘Judi 16 3’ is applied in the left foreground. The picture is painted after print number 66 from the Toneel ofte Vertooch by Pieter Schut from 1659, probably after an example by Anton Wierix in the Theatrum Biblicum. In its turn the Wierix print is based on an example by Maarten de Vos. The biblical story is framed by an interlace band within two double circles. The border is painted with C scrolls. Engravings by Schut were frequently used as source material for depictions on Dutch Delftware. At the Kingma pottery this biblical story was also painted on tiles.
