JVV 0039
Delft, 1680-1700
The small jar has a slightly conical shape with flat shoulders and is painted with a polychrome decoration of a bird perched on a branch on a light green-blue background. The painting is mainly done in blue and green with a single yellow accent. Along the lower end a frieze is painted of simplified leaves under a double circle. The coloured background was obtained by adding a metal oxide to the white tin-glaze: in this case a bit of cobalt oxide, the blue-colouring agent. Similar pots are common in Dutch Delftware, but generally they are more ovoid and have rounded shoulders. This shape and small size are rare.
