Blue and white biblical bowl: Baptism of Christ in the Jordan

JVV 0009

Delft, 1740-1760

The Porcelain Claw pottery

Mark: a claw with the number 60 underneath

The bowl has a rectangular shape and a profiled accolade-shaped rim. It is painted in blue with the biblical theme of the baptism of Christ in the river Jordan, framed within a cartouche. The well-executed painting is based on print number 18 from the New Testament series Toneel ofte Vertooch der Bybelsche Historien by Pieter Schut from 1659. The inner side of the rim is painted with floral motifs, the outside with branches and diamond shaped stripes.

Dimensions: length 32.7 cm / 12.87 in., width 28.5 cm / 11.22 in., height 9 cm / 3.54 in.
