Delft, circa 1680
The dish has a wide-spreading flange, the surface is painted entirely with a chinoiserie decor in purple and green. An equestrian has just dismounted from his horse and swings wildly with his whip. The horse’s head is turned to the right and looks at the lute-playing man who is standing near a pole. Oriental pavilions are visible in the background. The rim is in purple. The decoration is inspired by Chinese porcelain from the period of the last Ming emperor Chongzhen (1628-1644).
