Delft, circa 1700
The plate has a slightly raised flat flange and is painted in blue with a heraldic arms of alliance, probably for a marriage. The two escutcheons (shields) are enclosed between two laurel branches tied together and hang from a braided ribbon with balls. The whole is enclosed by a circular band filled with foliage, and on the outside with diagonal scroll ornaments alternating with pointed ones. The left-hand pointed escutcheon is charged with a windmill, while the right-hand oval escutcheon is charged with a ship at sea under a crown and banner. A wide band in the centre has been left unpainted, and the well is decorated with a band of small, interconnected scrolls. On the flange, a continuous frieze of flowers and foliage with six birds, including a peacock, is reserved on a blue ground.
