Delft, dated 1800
Both blue and white dishes have a wide, spreading rim and were made in honour of the wedding of Pieter Valstar and Johanna van Wingaarden, which was celebrated on June 2nd, 1800. Two flying putti hold an oval in which two shaking hands hold a heart pierced by two arrows. On the oval are two lovebirds under a banderole reading ‘peace brings joy’. Below the putti and the oval are the names of the marriage partners and the wedding date: ‘Pieter Valstar Johanna van Wingaarden wedded the 2nd of June, 1800’. The whole decoration is framed in a double circle and a band of crosses in the well. Five tufts of flowers and plants are painted on the flange, enclosed by a striped band with cartouches. The outer rim is brown.

Explanatory note
Pieter Valstar was born on September 13th, 1778 in ‘s-Gravenzande. His three-year-older wife Johanna van Wingaarden was born on July 9th, 1775 in Naaldwijk, where the marriage was also celebrated. The couple had two daughters: Grietje Valstar, who was born on September 27th, 1801, and Dirkje Valstar, who was born on November 9th, 1803. At the age of 23, Dirkje married Gijsbert van den Berg on June 3rd, 1826.
