Harlingen, 1660-1700
The blue and white charger has a wide, spreading flange and is painted in the centre with a drunkard preparing to drink from a bowl. The representation is framed in a double circle surrounded by a band of stylized floral ornaments. The well is left unpainted. The border decor consists of semicircles connected by small arc segments. The semicircles are filled with striped triangles. Three stilt marks, which are characteristic for majolica, are visible in the centre.
Dimensions: diameter 35,5 cm / 13.97 in.
Explanatory note
The double circle with a band of ornaments around the central decor was adopted from lobed dishes and is rare on majolica. It is an indication that both types of dish were made in the same factory.
