The Netherlands, 1675-1700
The blue and white dish has a wide-spreading flange and is painted in the centre with a sitting Chinese figure in an oriental landscape, within a double circle. The well is left unpainted. The flange is decorated with a continuous band of flowers and foliage. Three stilt marks, which are characteristic for majolica, are visible in the centre.
Dimensions: diameter 34.7 cm / 13.7 in.
Explanatory note
The chinoiserie decor on this dish is related to that on faience plates, dishes and lobed dishes from the second half of the seventeenth century. This type of décor is not often seen on majolica dishes from the last quarter of the century.
