Delft, 1670-1690
The lobed dish has nine single, wide lobes and is painted in blue with a floral chinoiserie decor of a peacock on a rock among flowers and plants. Several butterflies fly in the air. The nine lobes are decorated with panels in which four different decors are painted: two different floral decors and two variations of oriental objects on a ground of scrolls. The rim is blue.
Dimensions: diameter 40 cm / 15.74 in.
Explanatory note
This decor is derived from Chinese kraakporcelain from the first half of the seventeenth century. It was used in many variations on Dutch dishes from Delft and other places, but is rare on lobed dishes. The design and more naturalistic rendering of the flower branches on this lobed dish are otherwise rare on lobed dishes.
