Blue and white lobed dish with floral decor

JVV 0308

Delft, 1670-1690

The lobed dish is composed of eight, wide lobes and is painted in blue with a decoration of floral branches and a capricious, amorphous shape that may represent a ground, rock or fungus. An insect is flying at the bottom right. The depiction is framed in an octagon, with a radial-striped leaf motif on the inside of five sides. The eight lobes are alternately decorated with a pomegranate with leaves and an oriental leaf-shaped fan on a ground of scrolls. The rim is blue.

Dimensions: diameter 30 cm / 11.81 in.

Explanatory note
The design and the more naturalistic rendering of the flower sprays on this lobed dish is not very common with lobed dishes in general. Most of the floral decorations on lobed dishes were originally based on those on Chinese porcelain, mainly from the Chongzhen period ( 1628-1644).
