Wine jar with peacock and birds

JVV 0417

Delft, 1690-1700

The blue and white wine jug has an ovoid body that stands on a low foot, a slightly conical neck with a spout and a handle that ends in a rat tail. The jug is painted with a peacock, birds and butterflies in a landscape. A band on the shoulder is left unpainted. The neck is painted with a stylised double leaf ornament. The handle is decorated with scroll ornaments and stripes. The bottom is marked with the number 7.

Dimensions: height 22,8 cm / 8.97 in.

Explanatory note
Floral landscapes with peacocks and other birds enjoyed a certain popularity at the end of the seventeenth century. The decor on this jug is related to polychrome peacock designs on lobed dishes with tulip borders from the last quarter of the seventeenth century.
