JVV 0508
Delft, circa 1700
The baluster-shaped vase has a slightly constricted belly and ends in a neck with protruding mouth. The vase is painted in blue with a continuous oriental landscape. Under a pine tree are two conversing Chinese gentlemen, watched on the right by a standing, somewhat corpulent gentleman. There are alternating bands of large and small banana leaves around the neck and foot.
Dimensions: height 19 cm / 7.48 in., diameter 8 cm / 3.14
Explanatory note
The vase is probably a fairly accurate Delft imitation of a Chinese porcelain specimen from the Kangxi period (1662-1722). This can be deduced from several elements. For instance, the shape of this vase is common in Chinese porcelain but not in Delftware. Furthermore, the landscape decoration is distributed evenly across the vase, creating a subtle balance between form and decoration.
