A polychrome shoe

JVV 0517

Delft, circa 1760

The shoe has a pointed toe, and a low vamp that ends in a large bow and a semi-high heel. The shoe is coloured light purple-brown. A polychrome flower is painted on top of the vamp. The yellow bow has a little flower in the middle, while the brown tongue features a yellow flower. Imitation stitching is applied to the shoe. The rim of the heel is in dark purple.

Dimensions: length 13 cm / 5.11 in., width 5,2 cm / 2.04 in., height 5,7 cm / 2.24 in.

Explanatory note
Shoes in all shapes and sizes were part of the standard repertoire of almost all Delft potteries and were made in large quantities. The first examples date from the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Outside Delft, they were made in Harlingen potteries and in Amsterdam tile factories. Faience shoes were possibly a suitable gift for engagements and weddings.
