Delft, 1760-1780

The mule has a pointed, slightly raised nose, a low vamp and a high heel. A polychrome demi-flower with leafy branches is painted on top of the vamp. The mule is lined with purple all around. The top of the nose tip is yellow. The edge of the heel is in purple.

Dimensions: length 11.3 cm / 4.44 in., width 3.2 cm / 1.25 in., height 4 cm / 1.57

Explanatory note
Shoes in all shapes and sizes were part of the standard repertoire of almost all Delft potteries and were made in large quantities. The first examples date from the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Outside Delft, they were made in Harlingen potteries and in Amsterdam tile factories. Faience shoes were possibly a suitable gift for engagements and weddings.
