Blue and white floral cupboard bowl

JVV 0530

Delft, 1720-1740

The bowl stands on a straight foot, has a spreading wall and is painted in blue with a floral decor. On the outer wall are three oval, wreath-shaped cartouches filled with a flower vase, alternating with three cartouches filled with a flower surrounded by circular scroll ornaments. On the outside of these cartouches, two long scroll ornaments sprout, one of which bears fruit. Around the base are three floral elements consisting of three leaves with two floral branches and scroll ornaments. The inner rim is decorated with four leaves with scrolls and garlands, alternating with butterflies, and a large flower branch is painted on the bottom.

Dimensions: height 18 cm / 7.08 in., diameter 34,3 cm / 13.5 in.

Explanatory note
Delftware potteries manufactured different types of bowls for daily use and for decoration. The ones meant for daily use were either plain white or painted with simplified motifs. Large bowls like this one were often displayed in the home, especially on top of cupboards.
